Spotted ground squirrel is a steppe species of rodents.
Prefers completely open dry terrain with low grass.
On arable land, it lives only in temporary settlements.
Leads a daytime lifestyle.
It feeds on ground parts of plants, loves grains of barley, rye, wheat, eats insects willingly and a lot.
Spends the winter in a state of deep hibernation.
Back in the middle of the XX century.
the number of speckled gopher was so high that various toxic substances were used en masse to combat it.
As a result, since 1960, the number of speckled ground squirrels in Belarus has decreased by 80-90 percent.
Listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus.
